The Event

This lively lunch will be a rare chance to solve a tailor-made crossword alongside its setter, David Astle. Come unravel some fiendish clues, from anagrams to charades, and pick up tips about red herrings and booby traps. Undo riddles. Crack codes. Feel the thrill of seeing words freshly, and hear the strange confessions of a full-time language tragic as you go. BYO pencil. David will organise a crossword for you to solve but he won’t give you all the clues at once and he’ll spice up his talk with tales of legendary crosswords from around the world.

David Astle

David Astle was described by actor Geoffrey Rush as “the Sergeant Pepper of cryptic crosswords”. Best known as Mr Dictionary on SBS, and DA in the world of crosswords, David Astle is a full-time word nerd. Even growing up, he mixed and mangled every name he found. But thankfully in his 20s he found puzzles as way to channel his talents. Under the guise of DA, David also composes such diverse puzzles as Wordwit, Omega and Radar Trap for Fairfax, Rubicon for Australian Style, as well as writing the weekly column Wordplay for Saturday Spectrum in the SMH.
